Maheshwari sarees are handloom woven in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada river, a craft that dates back to the 18th century when Rani Ahilyabai Holkar patronized local weavers to create a fabric suited to the region's warm climate. The signature construction pairs a silk warp with a cotton weft, giving the saree a subtle sheen and crisp texture noticeably lighter than pure silk. Authentic Maheshwari sarees are known for their reversible pallu, woven so both sides look finished, along with distinctive striped, checked, or small buti motifs and a structured border details that trace back to the original Holkar court weavers.
